New Eels video - “Fresh Blood”
I can’t say enough about the Eels. I fell in love with Beautiful Freak in high school when I still drew on desks and wore Black Sabbath t-shirts. Starting the show on the upper level at Richard’s with a harmonica and a vintage mic, and then ending it halfway through the encore set when E got hit with a beach ball, still ranks as one of my favourite concert moments. E’s father, Hugh Everett III is not only responsible for most modern sci-fi, but his “Many Worlds” theory is the first real contender to Neils Bohr’s theories on the quantum world. E’s autobiography, Things the Grandchildren Should Know, is easily the best things I’ve ever read by a musician. Tom Waits fake cried on one of his records. He lived on a commune where he wasn’t allowed to speak or write, and ended up stealthily writing a record on a roll of toilet paper, which he eventually auctioned off. He “signed” MC Honkey (who was actually E), brought an actor on tour to play him, and started a feud. E once wore pajamas for an entire year, only putting on street clothes for shows at his band’s insistence. He’s friends with Fiona Apple. And on, and on, and on…
