Bill’s a hero because he survived a heart attack,
Mary’s a hero...
– I’m sure the end of the commercial explained a little better. But if those are the conditions, I don’t think I want to be a hero.

Mike: hey fatty
Me: you're gonna give me a complex
Mike: a complex carbohydrate I hope
Last night, I fulfilled a long-standing dream by Phil Collins’ing a few songs (drums & vocals) on Rockband, beating the guy only playing guitar.
Williams-Sonoma
Him: Hello!
Me: Holy crap!
Him: Oh I scared you, I'm sorry
Me: Yeah, little bit
Him: Is that for dinner? [pointing towards my pound of coffee and bag o chips]
Me: What? No... you work in a kitchen store, man! That's not dinner
Him: Anyway, can I help you with anything?
Me: Yes, I'm looking for a knife sharpener
[blah blah blah]
Him: Just make sure you don't cut a finger off! [quickly shows me his index finger, which is cut down to the first joint]
Me: [thinking he did a magic trick, and very impressed] Let me see that again!
Him: [shows that's it's really cut]
Me: Did you actually chop it off with a knife?
Him: No with a saw--I used to work in a mill
Me: Awww... that's disappointing
Him: Yeah, but it's still a good conversation starter

Travis: Man it's a beautiful day. Have you been outside yet?
Me: No, but it looks really nice... through my closed windows and venetian blinds

– Two tangentially related thoughts:
- This is going to cost the government a shitload when everyone else inevitably sues (not that that wouldn’t be a valid course of action for some)
- How did the sword, medieval knick-knacks, other weird crap store on Cambie stay in business the whole time? I am...

– I’m re-reading the book I read on the plane from Montreal to Vancouver when I moved here in 2002. Even though the last few (formerly) blank pages are covered in apprehensive/nervous/excited writing, it took me until page 173 to circle this phrase and write “fantastic” next to it....
Thanks, Jordan :(
Me: i remember back in like 1999-2000... i was doing this project on AIDS and went on a message board to get some volunteers to do a survey
Jordan (jordanphiliphenry.tumblr): oh man
the start of this story.
coming from you.
Me: [story about getting asked out by an old dude (45), refusing, and then being lectured about ageism]
Jordan: this story was somewhat disappointing, i was expecting it to end with an off-color joke that had a whole online community hating matthew gruman
You’re as beautiful as ever
– I bought my Mom a bag/purse for her birthday last year; it’s handmade with hemp by former sex trade workers who got together to form a bag-making company so they could leave the industry. Anyway, she gets a lot of compliments on it and her regular cashier at the health food store just adores...

Is anyone diabetic or friends/family with one?
I’m starting a website about diabetes, and something I’m hoping to do is feature stories from individual diabetics. If you know any, please have them email me (my first name @ my full name dot com).
There are a ton of great diabetes community sites on the net, but there’s nothing out there that someone like me really wants to read. I want to focus strongly on type I diabetes,...

Google's friendship algorithm
jaredm:
How does Google know when it’s time to add someone to my contact list in Google Chat? Do they have an algorithm for that? We all know that they scan our emails for ad placement so maybe they have an algorithm for new, burgeoning friendship too.
For instance, let’s say I only send hateful, cuss-filled, deriding email to somebody. After a few exchanges, will this person still show up in...
Always talk to strangers
Strangers talk to me all the time and, after realizing that most of them have really interesting stories to tell, I make a point to listen. So on the bus ride home, I ended up chatting with this former UBC Biology prof who quit a couple years ago when he developed Parkinson’s. Post-retirement, he put on a lot of weight and developed type II diabetes, and was actually just coming back from...
