I honestly don’t know how to respect someone’s lack of optimism…

benjad (2 days ago): I agree with mcleese, finally some originality in music! I love music made by people who just love making music and not to make money. Zach Condon is one of those people!
mondrian777 (1 day ago): Not to be a dick. But originality never left music. You probably just had a lapse in your awareness of it. This a damn amazing Beirut song, and they did a great job with the video too.
It is nice that independant music, (which never went away) is able to reach more peoples lives than it could in the heyday of tighly controlled music distribution in the 80's and 90's.
We live in great times for music.
mcleese (1 day ago): Respect that we're not so optimistic, dude.

HTML issues rethought
I was trying to find a better analogue than Ruby VS PHP and I thought of Sonar VS Garageband (both ways to record music on the computer). Sonar is more robust, so why learn and use Garageband if you already know it?
But I’ve known how to use Sonar for close to 10 years, and I’ve barely touched it since I got my MacBook about 8 months ago. Life priorities changed and I haven’t...
HTML issues
Tumblr doesn’t allow added HTML in chat reblogs? This is the second time I’ve run into issues with Tumblr in terms of markup and it a major reason I keep my other blog on Wordpress.
Tumblr is a wonderful system for amateurs, but I’m seeing less and less benefits for those of us who don’t need WYSIWYG for everything. There might be more flexibility, but I’ve never...
Futura (in response to the reblog below)
Me: (literally LOLing) Travis (in the other room): What?
Me: It’s a font joke… Do you really want to hear it?
Travis: No…
Just yesterday, I found this hairy Futura alphabet.
A life changing moment came when I realized that Futura is simply and excellent font and I had to stop being petty about not using it (a prof called it her favourite and used it EVERYWHERE — for...
xmas text #17
stranger: this is the text of christmas passed.
me: if only i had a font choice, i'd be the text of christmas futura.
I wish I knew how Amazon’s recommendation algorithm worked. I just bought Pumping Insulin and had Smart Pumping — a book that is almost five years older, potentially irrelevant, and barely in stock — recommended for my “next visit”. UPDATE: Looking at which of my purchases make up my recommendations, I’m no longer curious. They say I bought the Oxford Guide to...

We thought you would like to know about our feminist coloring book available at www.girlsnotchicks.com Have a great day! Non-porn spam is always my favourite. I honestly doubt that the Canadian Literature audience is into colouring (hint: when writing to Canadians, don’t use American English. It shows you’ve taken the time to care.) books, feminist or otherwise. Update: Spam or not,...

– Willamette Week | “King Bong” | December 12th, 2007 The whole Pacific Northwest is so smoked out. So great. The dude who won Canada’s Project Runway was a pothead from Vancouver. We’re a bunch of hippies up here and we love it. It’s true. I don’t want to fall into...
Internet Explorer 8 and Acid2: A Milestone →
This is big news for extreme web geeks. Not that we intend to use IE8, but we look forward to its widespread availability and the day that we can stop designing CSS hacks for the noncompliant behavior in IE 5-7. (thanks, Dailymeh) — marco

high times editorial office: episode three — samreich These have been absolutely HILARIOUS. I’m amazed at how good CHTV is getting with serials.
Speaking about weight . . .
Friend: Whoa. You lost a lot of weight, in like, 10 days. Did you start exercising? Diet pills? Are you throwing up?
Julia: No. I just stopped eating until I felt sick.
Friend: Seriously?
Julia: Breaking up sort of kills your appetite. It's awesome.
A few years ago, my co-worker Erika and I realized that we both drink a ton of very cold water every day. We started talking about it, and it turned out that even though we're both VERY skinny, we're under the impression that the extra effort your body makes to warm up the cold water somehow contributes to weight loss and health. It's not like either of us needed it, but it was strangely comforting.
This feels like that.

Vancouver in the Winter
Vancouver, BC has a very distinct odour at the start of winter. In most places, winter smells like nothing or smoke (be it from wood stoves, fireplaces, or diesel); but not Vancouver. We don’t get that nice sheen of ice and snow since temperatures rarely fall below 0 degrees. Instead, we get rain. We have a bunch of people, bundelled up in winter clothes that have been stored away for the...
Insulin Pump Discoveries
1. Even though it’s been over ten years, I still implicitly know how to use a syringe (insulin pumps use syringes for refilling and it’s very important to remove all bubbles). 2. Anything negative about shaving your stomach is immediately destroyed the first time you try remove the cannula. It’s like a Band-Aid that stays attached in the shower. OUCH! 3. No one, including me six...
I’ve finally started working on the digitization/revision of the Dictionary of Canadianisms on Historic Principles (DCHP-2) and it’s more fun than I’d imagined. I’m very excited about this.
I eat my food in a very specific way. If a dish of food is made up of several parts, I will eat from all parts, but making sure to save a couple bites of my favourite part to eat at the end. Lately I have been eating an apple and a slice of toast with peanut butter for breakfast, and every time I eat most of the apple, leaving two pieces behind to have after the toast. dalas thinks this is weird,...
My Mom is Very Cute
The day after I explained that it’s USB and not UBC (the school I attended), she was talking to my brother—he was helping her set up the digital photo frame he gave her for Chanukah—and admantly stated “I KNOW what a USB plug is!”. In his words “the same were her parents would have said I KNOW what a record player is!” She’s been on a technology...
Subjective Complaints
I find it incredibly ridiculous when someone tries to invalidate someone’s complaint (i.e. “I’m soooo stressed from work today!”) by subjectively applying their own experience (i.e. “I did TWICE as much work as you, and I’M not stressed!”): 1. Two different people will deal with the same situation differently. 2. One’s subjective experience makes...
My mental state right now
Is one of re-invigoration. I feel really alive, and a little like … I’m falling in love with myself again? As Just Julia, not 1/2 of a couple. Not ____andJulia (.com or otherwise!) Let it be said that I am not AGAINST relationships. I think you can learn and grow and be a complete individual while in a relationship. BUT! and it’s a big but … it’s extremely easy...
The thing I dislike about the Mac OS X GUI is that when I go to Exposé, a lot of windows look so similar that I end up getting RSS feeds instead of iTunes quite often.
I find most pagination completely unnecessary outside of increasing page view counts (i.e. not a valid reason to do anything).
I don’t think I like where Tumblr is headed. Right now, it’s gone from easy-to-use blogging platform to an in-group version of Digg. Overwhelmingly mediocre
I wonder what people think I actually do when I stay home to work.
Haha, I’ve been used in a Journalism class as an example of “somebody who’s contact information is easy to find”. In related news, a collection agency is looking for the other (unrelated) Gruman in Vancouver and they keep calling me/leaving messages on my machine.
dan: how did you get a girlfriend like elaine?
me: i worked out until i was in peek physical condition, got her to fall in love with me, and then let everything go.
dan: you're like the cristian bale of relationships.
Animas customer service is incredible. Three days ago, I had no reciept, so I called my local rep. Today, I have one copy from regular mail, one copy that was sent via courrier, and a PDF copy sent during that initial phone call.
Animas is owned by Lifescan who I have been a customer of for 15 years. They’ve always been wonderful and take more extra steps than any company I’ve ever...
The more features Tumblr adds—trackbacks, comments, etc.—the less I want to use it. I wish there were options to turn off their add-ons.
I think my “other shoe dropping” phase is over. It only took a week.
It turns out that my Mom and I have reached the same philosophy on life. She got hers through experience, but I got mine through mathematical probabilities.
